ZASSHI JOUHOU GO!
This section of Gaming Life in Japan takes a look at what's big in the latest issues of Japan's game magazines. From Famitsu to Dengeki to smaller publications like Dori Maga, Japan has lots of videogame magazines. While we tend to put up all the news and game information revealed in the magazines on the main pages of IGN, this section gives you a closer look just so you can be sure you're not missing out on anything.

FAMITSU 853

Adhering to our wishes in last week's Gaming Life in Japan, the latest Famitsu delivers a hot, big-eyed, big-busted idol for its latest cover. Sayaka Isoyaka does the honors this week. Born 10/23/1983, the 155 centimeter type A Sayaka-chan is a bit too short and old for our tastes, but no one can doubt that 91-60-87 figure.

If you've been downloading all the Gaming Life in Japan commercials over the past few weeks, you might be able to recognize Sakaya-chan. That's right! It's the girl in the towel from the Gundam commercial! To refresh your memory, download the ad here: ad page with Gundam.

Sayaka-chan is currently serving as a reporter for Swallow's Baseball 2005, a program on Fuji Television's CS739 channel. Her favorite type of guy is someone who doesn't get into fights at Disneyland (gah?). She comments, of her performance in the Gundam ad, that her brother thought it was cool. She doesn't seem to play games now, she recalls having played the Gundam titles on the NES and SNES.

For pictures of Sayaka-chan in a school girl outfit and in short, short shorts, be sure and pick up Famitsu 853 for yourself.

Even with a hot girl on its cover, Famitsu manages a couple of huge scoops this issue. Scratch! Viewtiful Joe (tentative) for the DS and Viewtiful Joe VFX Battle (also tentative) for the PSP and GCN are the big stories, but the magazine also provides a tiny update on Ookami along with an interview with Clover Studio. Also featured is confirmation of the Japanese PS2 release of Ghost Recon 2 (Summer '05) , the debut of Enjoy Golf and a few other titles.

The magazine's news section recaps the February and March sales season, revealing sales figures for hardware and software. The PSP comes out on top for the two months with 398,089 units sold, topping the PS2's 361,161 units, the DS's 258,810 units, the GBA's 140,927 units, the GCN's 32,157 units and the Xbox's 2534 units. The DS, however, sees a huge sales spike towards the end of the term thanks to the release of new games and colors.

Those PS2 sales need a closer look. The system is available in two forms in Japan: the standard, slim-model PS2 and the original model bundled with the hard disk and network adapter as part of the PS BB pack. While solid numbers aren't available, retailers reveal to Famitsu that sales of the BB pack are going well, as are sales of the stand-alone network adapter. This all has to do with the release of the Online Winning Eleven 8 Live Ware Evolution.

Software sales don't reveal too many surprises. Dynasty Warriors 5 tops all with 829,116 units sold following a release on 2/24. It's followed by Dragon Ball Z 3 (PS2, 609,928, 2/10), Devil May Cry 3 (PS2, 265,498, 2/17), World Soccer Winning Eleven 8 Live Ware Evolution (PS2, 254,977, 3/24) and Super Robot Taisen Original Generation 2 (GBA, 159,249, 2/3). The best selling PSP game is Tales of Eternia at 133,000 units.

Total software sales for the term come out to 7,764,000 units. This splits between the systems as follows: PS2 (4,831,000), GBA (965,000), PSP (748,000), DS (682,000), GCN (473,000) and Xbox (32,000), with 'other' accounting for 33,000 units. The total software sales drops considerably from 2004, which recorded 10,890,000 units, 2003, which recorded 10,956,000 units and 2002, which recorded 9,204,000 units. Slowing software sales over the term for the PS2 and GBA seem to be the big culprits here.

Gamecube Roms

Elsewhere in the news section, the magazine reveals some impressive numbers for Sega's Mushi King arcade title. Having first appeared in arcades in January of 2003, the game has become one of Sega's biggest arcade hits and has even spawned a cartoon and a GBA game. According to the magazine, Sega has shipped 8,000 Mushi King arcade units to 3,500 stores. More impressive is the number of cards that have shipped: 150,000,000 across 527 types of cards. 1.5 million people are playing the game, with some taking part in the 17,500 official tournaments that have been held so far.

According to an interview with the game's creator, Sega Family Entertainment Research's Hiroshi Uemura, also included in the issue, Mushi King actually has its origins at McDonalds, where it was originally placed as a digital toy in the 'Touch De Asobou!' series. The current Mushi King staff's original business was in making theme park attractions based mostly on digital contents centered on fish and insects, and this 'Touch De Asobou!' unit was one such project (the other was Sega's Fish Life). Following huge popularity at the restaurant, Uemura was given the go on making Mushi King.

This week's issue of Famitsu has just two reviews.

FAMITSU CUBE +
ADVANCE - MAY '05

Famitsu's monthly GameCube, Game Boy Advance and DS magazine features Kirby on the cover and includes a couple of nice bonuses: a sticker sheet with character stickers for all your favorite games (a new sticker sheet is included in every issue) and a Touch! Kirby pencil/eraser set (see the Gaming Swag section for more).

Coverage in this month's issue focuses, expectedly, on Touch! Kirby, with a twenty page guide to the game. It's joined by a continuing guide for Star Fox Assault.

Big scoops in the issue (although they aren't really scoops -- just more coverage of games that were previously announced) include One Piece Dragon Dream (GBA), Egg Monster Hero (DS), Naruto 3 (DS), Zelda (GCN -- no, there's nothing new) and Fullmetal Alchemist (DS).

Those looking for some deals will find a few discount coupons taking 200 yen off One Piece Grand Battle Rush and Gash Bell Yuujou Tag Battle 2 at Toys R Us. This may or may not be a savings, though, seeing as how games at Toys R Us in Japan tend to cost more.

The magazine's top ten sales list, which covers from 2/8 to 3/6, doesn't include much in the way of new software. Notably absent from the top ten is Harvest Moon: Song of Happiness for the GCN, which managed to pull in 19,394 in its first month of sales, good for twelfth place.

1. Star Fox Assault, Nintendo, GCN: 109,048
2. Rockman EXE 5: Team of Colonel, Capcom, GBA: 99,205
3. Another Code, Nintendo, DS: 65,521
4. Catch! Touch! Yoshi!, Nintendo, DS: 54,098 (133,069 total)
5. Sawaru Made in Wario, Nintendo, DS: 35,853 (677,020 total)
6. Super Mario 64 DS, Nintendo, DS: 35,080 (654,491 total)
7. Super Robot Taisen OG2, Banpresto, GBA: 33,111 (150,045 total)
8. Biohazard 4, Capcom, PS2: 29,928 (204,674 total)
9. Mario Party Advance, Nintendo, GBA: 28,132 (155,846 total)
10. Pokemon Emerald, Nintendo, GBA: 24,915 (1,265,995 total)

Surprisingly, the new GameCube Zelda game isn't at the top of the Famitsu Cube + Advance most wanted list. In fact, it isn't even in the top 5!

1. Touch! Kirby, Nintendo, DS
2. Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, Nintendo, DS
3. Hoshi no Kirby, Nintendo, GCN
4. Animal Forest DS, Nintendo, DS
5. Mario Baseball, Nintendo, GCN
6. The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, GCN
7. Pokemon GC, Nintendo, GCN
8. Mario Kart DS, Nintendo, DS
9. Donkey Konga 3, Nintendo, GCN
10. Mother 3, Nintendo, GBA

A large list of games feature in this month's review section, although many of them are already out.

FAMITSU PS2 - 04/22

Tengai Makyo III

Download Konjiki No Gash Bell Yuujou No Tag Battle 2 Gcn Iso 10

is on the cover of the latest issue of Famitsu PS2, and with good reason. Japan has waited over a decade for this game, and while the Famitsu review score isn't so hot, we're sure the game will be big at retail.

To celebrate the game's arrival, the magazine includes an interview with series father Hiroi Ouji, a mini poster for the game (whose back serves as a poster for Grandia III) and memory card stickers for the game (along with stickers for Gundam, Wild Arms and Tekken 5).

Also included is a twenty-page Gundam: Ichi Nen Sensou guide and thirty-six page Wild Arms guide booklet. Yes, the kids at Famitsu PS2 know how to take care of their readers with mega bonuses.

Featured on the pages of the magazine are the same scoops that were included in Weekly Famitsu: Viewtiful Joe (just the PSP version, of course), Ookami and an interview with Clover Studio. Elsewhere, the magazine catches up with the big scoops from last week's Famitsu, Code Age and Grandia III.

There are no reviews in this week's issue of Famitsu PS2. We're bracing for a slow, slow software presence in mid-April here in Japan.

DENGEKI PS - 04/22

At last breaking a disturbing trend, the latest Dengeki PlayStation has a different cover story from Famitsu PS2. Instead of Tengai Makyo, Dengeki went with Spectral Force Chronicle, the next entry in Idea Factory's Neverland series. Also included are looks at other Japan-only games such as Taisen Hot Gimmick Axes-Jong, Ururun Quest, Mabino Style and Shoujo Yoshitsuneden 2.

The magazine has coverage of 'real' games as well. Just like Famitsu PS2, it includes looks at Code Age and Grandia III as well as Tengai Makyo III. Also included is the magazine's first look at Phantasy Star Universe, along with an interview with producer Yuji Naka and director Takao Miyoshi. Check out IGNPS2 for more from the interview.

Strategy guides included in the issue include Tekken 5, Gundam: Ichi Nen Sensou and Winning Eleven 8: Live Ware Evolution along with continuing guides for Wild Arms, Metal Gear Solid 3 (still!) and -- well, there are a bunch of games covered in the strategy section.

Just a handful of reviews in this week's issue.
